This past fall Girls ROCk it! was offered at 5 elementary schools in PEC. 89 girls in grade 7/8 registered for this girls only program. The sessions were youth led allowing the girls to select their preferences from a list of healthy snack options and theme-related activities. Making smoothies, dressing up in fun costume pieces for friends’ photo shoots, creating Gratitude and Goals journals and participating in a Pay It Forward activity were some of the activities selected. Topics of discussion included media critique of the portrayals of men and women in the media, bullying and friendships and plans for the future. Information was shared about RESPs (Registered Education Savings Plan) while the girls discussed their education and career goals. Incredibly inspiring! New to the program this year was a session focused on Building Resiliency which involved conversation about loss and personal struggles and choosing positive paths when faced with adversity. The end of program celebration took place at SkyZone Trampoline Park in Whitby with two busloads of girls spending the day together engaged in fun physical activity!
